In Microsoft Windows, OS/2, and DOS, batch file is the program name for a script file type or a text file that contains a series of commands. It is activated by typing “run.bat” (without quotes) in the command prompt window. A batch file contains commands interactively accepted at the command prompt. The file may have constructs (GOTO, IF, CALL, Labels, etc.) which enable conditional looping and branching within the batch file. Batch files ease the regular tasks when the user sets up an automating script. Running a batch file, the shell system (cmd.exe or command.com) reads and executes the file command. In the earlier Windows versions, the user could type run.bat in the command prompt in MS-DOS mode. In Linux operating system, it is called shell script. The extension “.bat” was used in Windows operating systems. There were changes to the batch files handling, some are applicable to all the batch files, and others apply to certain versions only.
