What is  ntvdm.exe

A Windows application known as NT Virtual DOS Machine, with executable file extension ntvdm.exe, is a system file that gets installed alongside your Windows Operating System. The primary purpose of the file is to enable 16-bit programs to launch in a 32-bit platform. If you have a 16-bit piece of hardware on your machine, the file should remain enabled, because it is crucial to your hardware’s function and performance. In the event that you execute several 16-bit programs, you will see several instances of the file running in Task Manager. Basically, one 16-bit program needs a corresponding ntvdm.exe file. Simply put, if you launched three 16-bit programs simultaneously, you will most likely see three ntvdm.exe files running in your Task Manager window. Once the program has been closed down, the corresponding ntvdm.exe file will likewise terminate from your Task List. However, if you are on a Windows NT4 OS, the file will remain in your Task List, because it was designed to run this way, by default, on a Windows NT4 system.
