The file himem.exe is a file in FreeDOS that matches the file himem.sys, which is a DOS device driver that allows DOS programs to store extended memory through the Extended Memory Specification (XMS). Extended Memory refers to memory above the first megabyte of address space in an IBM PC or compatible. DOS programs running in real mode cannot directly access this memory, but can do so with the use of the API XMS, which is implemented by the driver himem.exe (himem.sys). This device driver is important because various versions of Microsoft Windows that run on top of the DOS operating system require this driver to be able to run. It provides access to the memory beyond the first 1 MB of space and is required by Windows 9x/Me in order to load the graphical portions of the operating system. Extended memory can also be accessed by directly by DOS programs running in protected mode using VCPI or DPMI.
