The beep.sys file is a driver installed by Microsoft Windows for the built-in speakers of computers and laptops. The driver is a system file but is not an essential process to keep the system running in tiptop shape. This can be found in a subfolder of C:\Windows, more specifically, saved as C:\Windows\System 32\drivers\beep.sys. Basically, the file makes a beeping sound whenever applications are being accessed, or sometimes, with certain keyboard strokes. Since this is not a core Windows component, some users disable the file to prevent it from making any beeping noise. Disabling the file will not hamper system function, since it is still stored within the system’s directory. Uninstalling it could be risky, as some users discovered. Those who uninstalled the file, usually get an error message that the beep.sys could not be found, which then would result in automatic shutdown or computer freezes. The average size of the file is 4 KB. The newer versions are about 6 to 7 KB. If the file is shown as being larger than the approximate file sizes, users suspect that the file in their system is malware.
