What is  mup.sys

The file mup.sys is connected to a process known as Multiple UNC Provider, also known as Multiple Universal Naming Convention Provider. The application is mainly used to access files from a remote computer source. The file mup.sys is the one responsible for handling queries for remote file I/O operations. When a request is sent, the I/O Manager calls on mup.sys so the request can be addressed, and the user can then gain access to the file being requested. The file is generally installed when you install your Windows Operating System. It has a standard file path of C:\Windows\System 32\Drivers\mup.sys. There have been a number of reports made by users that the file causes system boot hangs. It was later determined that it was not actually the file that caused the frozen system, but the system showed an error message regarding the file because it was at the point when mup.sys was loading, that system failure manifested, and the file was thought to be the culprit because it kept reloading itself in continuous loops, after resetting itself to try to correct the error. The actual culprits were found to be hard disk failure, corrupted registry, installation of new hardware was not completed or was found to be faulty, and hardware failure.
