What is  conhost.exe

Process name for an application that is installed via the executable file conhost.exe is Console Window Host. The basic function of the process was previously taken care of by another Windows process known as csrss.exe. When Windows 7 came about, the OS integrated a much more reliable and stable console host, this is why you now have Console Window Host. One major improvement of this console host is that it provides a tighter security feature, preventing malware infection. The file tremendously decreased the system’s vulnerability by directing Local Procedure Calls straight to Console Host instead of sending it directly to csrss.exe, which is run through the Local System account. The vulnerability of the previous file rendered it open to malware attacks where the malicious software executes code to disrupt system processes. This malicious behavior is referred to as a “shatter attack.” With the new Window Console Host, malicious files that want to interfere with normal system performance are not automatically escalated. Thus, any attempts of malicious software to interfere with application codes will be thwarted.
