The process associated with the file rtvscan.exe is called Real Time Virus Scan. This is part of the software for Norton Anti-Virus. The application works to scan files that the user is attempting to access or open, both online and offline, to check if the files are malicious or not. To be more specific, the process scans for malicious files, whether on the Internet or on your computer, in real time. This gives you immediate results should the AV application find anything suspicious. The file also serves as an update service for your AV software, by directly connection to Symantec’s System Center; so the updates can be delivered and installed in a much faster way. You can usually locate the file in a subfolder of Program Files, generally in C drive. The file is an important part of your Norton AV, and as such, uninstalling it, or even simply disabling it, is not recommended.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. rtvscan.exe. is used by Real Time Virus Scan, If you shut down rtvscan.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop rtvscan.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Real Time Virus Scan, from your system.
