The executable process file chkntfs.exe (version 6.1.7600.16385) is a Windows process file that is associated with Microsoft Windows Operating System that is created by the Company, Microsoft Corporation. The process file is found to be running in the Task Manager as the process chkntfs.exe which features a visible window however, is neither a Windows core file nor is it considered to be CPU intensive. On Windows 7 or XP, the process file chkntfs.exe has a file size of 476 bytes (16% of all occurrences), 85,320 bytes with 4 other variants namely, 680,300 bytes, 72,704 bytes, 71,680 bytes or 112,128 bytes. The process file is found to be located in C:\Windows\system 32 folder or sometimes in the subfolder of C:\Documents and Settings. The certificate of the process file chkntfs.exe has been signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher and has been issued by Microsoft Time Service.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. chkntfs.exe. is used by NTFS Volume Maintenance Utillity, If you shut down chkntfs.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop chkntfs.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is NTFS Volume Maintenance Utillity, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as NTFS Volume Maintenance Utillity, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application.
