The cfr.exe process is an executable program file integrated into the system by the KLite Codec Pack software, which is a Windows application comprised of a set of video and audio encoder and decoder tools designed to implement compatibility support into the Windows-based system for a wide variety of video and audio content file formats. The KLite Codec Pack, upon its installation in the system, places the cfr.exe process as the program dispatcher file of the Windows Setup API application, which is a small program built into the KLite Codec Pack, and this application is responsible for implementing compatibility support into various built-in and third party Windows applications in the system that may require these audio and video decoders/encoders. The KLite Codec Pack suite of audio/video encoders/decoders can allow Microsoft Windows to play audio and video content in different file formats, since it extends the built-in compatibility support of Microsoft Windows for viewing audio and video content files.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. cfr.exe. is used by KLite Codec Pack and Windows Setup API, If you shut down cfr.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop cfr.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is KLite Codec Pack and Windows Setup API, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as KLite Codec Pack and Windows Setup API, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
