The smartui.exe process is a mainframe application developed by ScanSoft, Inc., now merged with Nuance Communications, a multinational computer software technology corporation that provides speech and imaging applications. Paperport is a document management system that is designed to help users organize digital documents and files, particularly scanned documents. PaperPort supports the stacking and unstacking of pages in a document, a method and system that manage records stored in a computer system, thereby allowing users to break them up into individual pages and to reassemble them into new PDF files. Image editing for these files is also provided by PaperPort. As part of Paperport, smartui.exe allows the use of a user’s scanner's buttons which enable one to configure the option “Scan to” key to the MFC, simplifies scanning of various file formats and manage scanned documents to a specific directory or folder.
