Microsoft Encarta was a digital multimedia encyclopedia published by Microsoft from 1993 to9 2009. It was designed to enable users to find relevant and reliable information on any subject online or offline. The encyclopedia has an interactive atlas with more than 1.8 million locations, and which can be freely rotated and magnified to show locations. It features literature guides and book summaries, foreign language translation dictionaries, and map treks that are tours of geographic features and concepts. Encarta has a sidebar that could display alternative views, journals, essays, and original materials relevant to the topic being researched. A feature called Encarta Research Organizer was included in earlier versions of the encyclopedia to assist users in gathering and organizing information and constructing a Word document-based report. Formerly successful encyclopedias like Collier, Funk and Wagnalls, and Merit Scholar Encyclopedia were bought by Microsoft and were incorporated into Encarta.
