The ctrlvol.exe process is an executable component file of the firmware resources and device driver software utilities that are pre-installed into certain laptops and mobile computing devices from Acer. The ctrlvol.exe process is also integrated into the firmware components and drivers that are distributed as standalone installer packages with Acer TravelMate mobile computers and laptops, or as downloadable installers from the Acer support website. The ctrlvol.exe process is specifically deployed into the system by these Acer firmware resources and device driver utilities to assist in integrating user on-screen access to the sound volume controls of these Acer TravelMate laptops and mobile computing devices via the Fn key, which is implemented into the keyboard of these mobile computers and laptops as one of its special function keys. The ctrlvol.exe process is configured by default, upon installation of these Acer TravelMate drivers and firmware utilities, to automatically initialize during system startup.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. ctrlvol.exe. is used by Acer TravelMate Firmware/Driver Software and Acer TravelMate On-Screen Volume Control Application, If you shut down ctrlvol.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop ctrlvol.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Acer TravelMate Firmware/Driver Software and Acer TravelMate On-Screen Volume Control Application, from your system.
