The comet.dll file has been reported to be flagged by the system security tools of many users as a malicious application that is a component or variant of the AdWare.Win32.Comet.ap program, which is a family of obtrusive adware items known to infect unprotected Windows-based computers with outdated system security certificates. These users claim that the comet.dll file is capable of displaying pop-up advertisements while browsing the Internet with Internet Explorer or older versions of Mozilla Firefox, and some of these users state that the comet.dll file is also capable of hijacking outdated Internet Explorer Web browsers and can change its homepage and search page settings by replacing it with URLs that point to websites that are managed by the authors of the comet.dll malware or its associated companies. Other users claim that their anti-malware applications flag the comet.dll file as a malicious program associated with a variant of the ADW_COMETS application, which is another family of obtrusive programs known to infect unsecured Windows-based computers with unencrypted TCP/IP network ports. These users state that the comet.dll is activated by an EXE component process of this malicious application during system startup, and one of its executable component files is said to be capable of creating and injecting keys and entries into the Windows System Registry that instructs the system to allow the comet.dll file to be activated during system startup and some of its component EXE files to operate as a hidden background process during system runtime.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. comet.dll. is used by AdWare.Win32.Comet.ap and ADW_COMETS, If you shut down comet.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop comet.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is AdWare.Win32.Comet.ap and ADW_COMETS, from your system.
