The library file altavista.dll is a process known as Altavista Toolbar from the software Dynamic Toolbar or Altavista Toolbar by Visicom Media. Altavista Toolbar is a single search box with pre-configure buttons that provides different function to the forefront of the user browser. This includes page translation, information lookups and site searching. All functions of the toolbar default to Altavista searches, or to its parent company, Yahoo! When you enter a certain key words, the toolbar opens the Altavista search box with the same keyword entry. Users could do that by opening the homepage but the toolbar save a few keystrokes. Pop-up blocker is added to the Altavista toolbar which is useful for users using older versions of IE. Adding the toolbar would not do any harm to the system as the search and lookup capabilities are not similar with other search sites. This search engine lets users to browse for images, videos, music, news, and content and altavista translation.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. altavista.dll. is used by Altavista Toolbar, If you shut down altavista.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop altavista.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Altavista Toolbar, from your system.
