Microsoft created MENC files for Windows Mobile Encrypted Files use. It is categorized as data files and primarily intended for Windows Mobile Devices. MENC files can be seen on removable media cards and normally contain the original file or the additional header information of the encrypted version. These files permit file storage security for external storage cards. Usually, these files are written with the original filename, a GUID in the middle as the generated key that communicates with the encryption filter whether the file can be decrypted or not, and with the MENC file extension. The output will be FILENAME.GUID.MENC. With Windows Active Sync or Windows Mobile Device Center, the device that generates the file is able to decrypt MENC files and able to transfer it to a personal computer. MENC files can’t be accessed or read, not until the MENC file extension is hidden because it is considered as encrypted files.
