what is a .t06 file?

Many people enjoy the convenience of submitting their tax returns online. Used by the software name TaxCut (For the 2009 tax year H&R Block At Home was rebranded), this file format was developed by H&R Block e-solutions. This is available either via an online service or on a physical DVD. This software enables US based citizens to prepare their federal and state tax return forms. You can also submit the forms directly to the IRS online or alternatively print them to be mailed yourself. Using the TaxCut software one can also export data from this format to a PDF (Portable Document Format) file which is more widely accepted. The number at the end signifies the year for which the return is created. Returns generated with TaxCut can only be opened with the version of TaxCut which was used to create them in the first instance. So the file extension in question here is specifically for returns made for the year 2006.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .t06 files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .t06. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
