Why does my mouse sometimes freeze up?

It started happening about a month ago. I tried a new mouse and worked okay for a couple days then went back to its old ways. The cursor will work as normal, then freeze up. It doesn't matter what mouse I use. Occasionally the mouse will completely shut down so I'll have unplug it and replug it in.

Hi Keke,

I would recommend checking the Event Log from when these mouse freezes occur.

Go to: Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer

If there are any entries with a red or yellow sign next to it, they need to be looked into and sorted out.

The other thing you can try is to uninstall the device driver for your Mouse through the Device Manager, restart your computer and let Windows reinstall the device driver again.

- Start - type in devmgmt.msc - press Enter
- Locate "Mice and other pointing devices" in the Device Manager

Let us know how you go with this.

Hi Keke,

You can use the below steps to resolve the mouse issue:

1. Go to start->control panel->mouse
2. Uncheck the box "Turn on ClickLock".

Then, also try the below method:

In the Control Panel, select Mouse and the Pointer Options tab. Uncheck “Enhance pointer precision” and the problem may go away.

You can also try updating the mouse driver:

  1. All your input devices must be working under Windows (i.e. the old version of the USB driver must not be running, the device should not be disabled etc.)
  2. You must be Administrator.
  3. Select "System" from the control panel.
  4. Select the "Hardware" tab.
  5. Click "Device Manager".
  6. Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices".
  7. Double-click on the desired input device.
  8. Select the "Driver" tab.
  9. Click "Update Driver".
  10. Click "Next"
  11. Select the proper subsection below.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Lokesh.
