Tor.exe keeps popping up on every startup. I have Trust Defender which alerts me of this and tells me to kill Tor.exe. Is this a malicious Trojan? How can it be permanently removed?

I do not know how long Tor.Exe been on my computer. None of my anti-virus program (Avira, Microsoft Essentials) ever caught this on any scan. I became aware of it when my bank had me start using Trust Defender.

Hi Mike,

The TOR service is typically used for anonymous browsing.

Some quick references:

https://www.torproject.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_...

It is usually located at C : > Program Files > Tor

Programs such as Privoxy, Polipo and some web browsers use TOR to enable anonymous surfing of the web.

If your security program detects any other instances of the TOR service, especially at unfamiliar locations or part of unfamiliar programs, then it could indicate malware activity in which case cleaning it is recommend.

You can choose to disable the TOR service and prevent it from running at startup if required.

Hope this helps.

James

James, Thank you for your reply regarding Tor.exe\" On my computer there is no program C : Program Files Tor My Trust defender flags the program as unknown and possibly malicious and I kill the program using trust defender. It appears on every startup. I purchased the ReviverSoft program in an attempt to locate and remove or disable Tor. ReviverSoft does not identify nor allow me to disable Tor. Any further suggestions? Thank you Mike

Hi Mike, I wouldn\'t worry too much about Trust Defender\'s warning. The TOR process in general doesn\'t pose any harm or consume a lot of resources. I\'m guessing a TOR dependent program or service on your PC is recreating the TOR.exe process at every startup. Maybe you can launch the Windows Task Manager to locate this process and find out which program it is a part of and go from there. As for RegistryReviver\'s Startup Manager, have you tried looking through all the Startup entries and Services? There is also a nice little app called AutoRuns that you can use to review the startup entries. Let me know how you go. James

Hi Mike,

The program tor.exe allows users to surf the internet anonymously. It provides organizations and individual users to share data over a public network without compromising their privacy. The tor.exe program has hidden services that keep websites from tracking their personal information, surfing activities or instant messaging conversations. It let users publish websites without the need to reveal the location of the site.

The tor.exe file is commonly located in a subfolder of C:/Program Files/Vidalia Bundle/Tor/.

You can refer to the below link for uninstalling Tor:

Lokesh
