Purchased new Dell Inspiron 3531; more than half of RAM (total RAM= 4.00 GB; 3,89 GB usable) is in use by processes, drivers & operating system (Windows 8.1 with Bing, unfortunately), beginning at startup.

Seems to be using more RAM when internet browser used is Google Chrome (32-bit version; preferred but not above processing speed).

Other system specs: processor- Intel Pentium(R) CPU N3530 @ 2.16 GHz; 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor; no pen/touch display

Great question Julie.

There are two key areas where you should try to focus time to fix this problem.
  1. Removing Programs you don't need anymore
  2. Application running at Windows Startup
First step is to uninstall any application that you no longer need. Installed applications can use system resources without you realizing it even if you don't use them. You can do this using PC Reviver or you can follow the steps we have laid out in this blog article: http://www.reviverso...

After you have done this you should disable applications from running at startup that you don't need. Applications that are set to run at Startup not only slow down your computer when it starts but can continue to slow it down as you keep using it. Once again you can edit startup programs using PC Reviver (or Registry Reviver) or you can use this article we wrote (step 3): http://www.reviverso...

Hope this helps!

The only way to reduce the amount of RAM being used is to remove some programs that are running.

You can try uninstalling some old programs, that may help with the RAM problems.

It is also worth noting that Google Chrome is well known for being a hog for RAM. It is possible that you won't get much performance out of a computer running chrome. I would consider using an alternative browser, such as Firefox or Opera

Hi Julie,

Follow the below steps to reduce RAM usage:
  1. Click Start (Windows Icon) Button, then click Control Panel.
  2. In the new window click "System and Security".
  3. Click "Administrative Tools" and another window will pop open.
  4. Click the shortcut to "Services".
  5. You will see a list of services that Window runs. Scroll down until you see "SuperFetch".
  6. Right click on "SuperFetch" and choose "Properties".
  7. Click the "Stop" button to end that service now.
  8. In the "Startup Type" drop down list choose "Disable" and then click "Apply".

I hope this helps.

Thank You!
Lokesh
