Wercon.exe is the process file for Windows Event Reporting, a program that tracks system crashes and other issues and notifies Microsoft analysis and resolution. Application faults, unresponsive applications, kernel faults, and other application specific problems are reported to provide users with troubleshooting information, updates, and solutions without requiring any changes to an application. The report includes mini-dump and head dump if required. Codenamed Watson, Windows Error Reporting is different from the Dr. Watson, the debugging tool that leaves the memory dump in the local machine. Windows Error Reporting’s function is to collect and offer information post-error debug. When a dump (or error information) is sent to the Microsoft server, the information is analyzed for solution, to be sent back to the user. Windows Error Reporting is a Windows service which can be optionally disabled. If wercon.exe itself crashes, an error is reported that the original process can no longer be sent.
