What is  tphkmgr.exe

The tphkmgr.exe process, also known as ThinkPad Hotkey Manager is developed by IBM Corp. This process is installed by default in IBM Thinkpad Laptops which controls the function keys that are added therein, and generally, it has four categories namely, the R Series which is specially made for Everyday Computing, the T Series for Premier Performance or for proficient users, the X Series which is included in the thinnest and lightest models, and the Tablet that also functions as convertible Tablet. The tphkmgr.exe only runs upon launching of ThinkPad Hotkey Manager, and the process can be seen listed in the Windows task manager, and enables the user to customize or change the settings of the function keys in the IBM Thinkpad Laptop. Moreover, it enables the user to customize the settings such as decreasing or increasing the audio volume of the laptop, or by activating the audio buttons. Also, to make navigation to the features of the laptops easier, users can also create their own shortcuts. Although some of the function keys are set to default to perform specific tasks, the user can still change the function of each keys to his or her preference.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. tphkmgr.exe. is used by IBM HotKey, If you shut down tphkmgr.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop tphkmgr.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is IBM HotKey, from your system.
