The tor.exe file is a process that is actually a program known as The Onion Router, a Tor Project. This refers to virtual tunnels that provide privacy and security when using the Internet. It consists of many useful applications that can securely used by individuals users or groups to communicate via the net, share information, exchange files, etc. without disclosing their real identity. This process is developed to basically protect Internet users. They can gather information from the Interne without giving their own information. This same application is responsible in protecting the user from revealing his location especially when creating or publishing a website. The IP address or location of the user is not disclosed with the help of this particular process. Thus, any user with a computer can connect to the Internet without any worries of his identity and location if this program is installed in his system. This process works in any Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. tor.exe. is used by The Onion Router, If you shut down tor.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop tor.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is The Onion Router, from your system.
