The process portaol.exe is described as Port Network Pure Magic that is a component of the latest version of the AOL 9.0 Optimized SE software. This application configures in-home internet gateways to improve access and performance for AOL services, Web browsing, and applications like on-line gaming, instant messaging, and streaming video and music. A new feature called Fast Start pre-loads AOL components when the computer starts up, and clicking the icon launches AOL immediately. it remains in the background when AOL is closed so the application can be re-launched. A quick diagnostic tool Check My Computer enables users to retrieve any information about the system and fix issues that may be detected. TopSpeed technology is provided to speed up browsing and reduce web page download time whether the user connectivity is via dial-up or broadband access. For convenience, the toolbar carousel enables users to customize the AOL toolbar, for example renaming the icons, changing icon locations, or removing and adding icons.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. portaol.exe. is used by AOL 9.0 Otimized SE, If you shut down portaol.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
