The process ocsservice.exe is a core component of Open Computers and Software Inventory, which is an open source automated inventory and deployment system. This application enables users to know all devices connected to the IT network, including software and hardware components of the computer. The OCS inventory agent runs in client machines and collects information about the hardware and software components of each networked unit. Data gathered by OCS can be stored in an access database using MySQL, Apache and Perl management server that can be accessed to visualize the inventory from a Web interface. The dialog between the OCS client machines and the server is based on the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and the formatting of the data is done on XML. The use of mod-perl server side and the simplicity of the inventory software facilitate the inventory of more than a thousand machines within a network.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. ocsservice.exe. is used by Open Computers and Software Inventory, If you shut down ocsservice.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop ocsservice.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Open Computers and Software Inventory, from your system.
