Nua.exe is the executable file for Norton Update Agent, a free Symantec application which downloads the latest versions of the Norton product while giving the user the option to select updates. It targets the earlier versions of the Norton Internet Security, the Norton 360, and the Norton AntiVirus. Free update is received whether the user’s subscription is active, or expired, or trial. The updated subscription, however, remains in the same status as the earlier Norton product. If the user is eligible for an update, he receives a notification from the Norton Update Agent prompting to update free of charge. This feature is not mandatory, however. If the user decides to upgrade to the latest version, a click to the Start option initializes the update, and it takes about 1 minute. The older version is no longer needed to be manually uninstalled to be replaced; the latest version gets automatically downloaded and installed.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. nua.exe. is used by Norton Update Agent, If you shut down nua.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop nua.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Norton Update Agent, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Norton Update Agent, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
