The maxbackservice.exe process is an executable program file that is embedded into the Seagate Manager application. Seagate FreeAgent products, which are external data storage disks, are bundled with the Seagate Manager software, and this program deploys the maxbackservice.exe process as one of the component files of the Maxtor Backup Service module. This module is an applet built into the Seagate Manager software and is responsible for assisting the Seagate Manager program in implementing data backup and recovery functionalities into the Windows-based system where supported Seagate FreeAgent disks are connected to. The maxbackservice.exe file is placed in the system upon the connection of these Seagate FreeAgent data storage devices to the Windows-based computer and after installing the Seagate Manager software, which also means the maxbackservice.exe process is packaged into the installer distribution utilities of the Seagate Manager program.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. maxbackservice.exe. is used by Seagate Manager and Maxtor Backup Service Module, If you shut down maxbackservice.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop maxbackservice.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Seagate Manager and Maxtor Backup Service Module, from your system.
