The kmixer.sys process is the executable file for the Kernel-Mode Audio Components, or simply KMixer, a Windows driver or WDM used for audio playback and sound filtering. KMixer creates a mixed stream that a filtering device can handle. The streams can have different wave formats with different rates, channel counts, and sample sizes. Samples are expressed in integer or a floating-point value. KMixer also performs format conversion without mixing in a capture stream. The KMixer system driver, also called KS filter, does the following:
• Multiple-PCM audio streams mixing
• High-definition format conversion
• Bit-depth conversion
• Configuration of speakers and channel mapping
• Supports IEEE and PCM floating-point data
• Supports stereo and mono data formats from 8-bit format to 16-bit format
• With bit depth greater than 16-bit
• Has multi-channel formats in more than 2 channels
• 3-dimensional head-related transfer function (HRTF)
• Has sample-rate and mixing conversion rates
