The hdtuneupsrv.exe file is the process called Hard Disk Tune-Up that is part of the application Hard Disk Tune-Up created by Sammsoft. It is not a system process. It can record inputs. This file has a digital signature from Sammsoft with certificate issued by VeriSign Time Stamping Services Signer – G2. Hard Disk Tune-Up is a scannine engine that detects hard disk. It is a disk maintenance tools that improves your hard drive speed by defragmenting files that are spread over your hard drive causing increased read times that slow down the performance of your computer, crash your system, and cause slow startup, general system failures or unexpected shutdown. It uses linear file arrangement to reduce data access time and help achieve optimal disk performance with optimum read/write access. It offers rapid defrag so you can see results immediately and work on your computer with less waiting time.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. hdtuneupsrv.exe. is used by Hard Disk Tune-Up, If you shut down hdtuneupsrv.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop hdtuneupsrv.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Hard Disk Tune-Up, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
