What is winxp.exe
Many users claim that the winxp.exe process is a malicious executable program file that launches a variant of the Backdoor.IRCBot software, which is a family of backdoor rootkits and Trojans known to infect Windows-based systems. Other user reports state that the winxp.exe process is associated with the Backdoor.Trojan program, which is another family of Trojans reported to infect unprotected computers that run on widely used versions of Microsoft Windows. Both user reports claim that the winxp.exe process is capable of automatically initializing during system startup because of certain keys and entries the winxp.exe process can create and inject into the Windows System Registry upon its successful placement and activation in the system. The winxp.exe process is also said to covertly continue operating as a background process during system runtime, in order to find system vulnerabilities like unprotected TCP/IP network ports that the winxp.exe process can use to initiate contact with remote servers operated and managed by its authors. Upon establishing communications with these Web servers, the winxp.exe has been reported to download more malicious programs unto the system.
