Wddmstatus.exe is the executable file for Windows Display Drive Manager, a graphic driver architecture that enables better graphics display and function since Windows Vista. WDDM provides required functionality to render desktop applications using the Desktop Window Manager, the Direct 3-D compositing window manager. It supports the required DXGI interfaces for basic creation and management of devices. WDDM requires capable video cards so that the display driver can implement the interfaces of the device driver for the Direct 3-D runtime applications. WDDM may implement runtime interfaces for the 10/10.1 Direct3D and higher. Wddmstatus.exe process enables areas of functionality that were not provided by the earlier driver models. The features included are virtualized video memory, runtime handle scheduling of the concurrent graphics contexts, the cross-process Direct 3-D sharing platform, shared Direct 3-D surfaces across processes, and enhanced fault-tolerance when the WDDM driver encounters a fault, and the graphics stack restarts the driver.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. wddmstatus.exe. is used by WD Drive Manager, If you shut down wddmstatus.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop wddmstatus.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is WD Drive Manager, from your system.
