The vmware-tray.exe process is an executable program file bundled with other application executables, some DLL modules, certain SYS driver files, various background processes and associated resource components that are required by VMware Tools among other VMware software products. These are Windows programs classified as system virtualization applications, and the vmware-tray.exe process is included in the installer distribution packages of these VMware software products. This also means the vmware-tray.exe file is installed in the system upon the installation and configuration of these VMware system virtualization tools. The vmware-tray.exe process is specifically deployed to serve as a major component of the VMware Tools Tray Application module, which is an applet built into the VMware Tools software and other system virtualization programs from VMware.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. vmware-tray.exe. is used by VMware Software Products and VMware Tools and VMware Virtual Tools Tray Application Module, If you shut down vmware-tray.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop vmware-tray.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is VMware Software Products and VMware Tools and VMware Virtual Tools Tray Application Module, from your system.
