The tFncKy.exe file is the process that is installed and used on every Toshiba laptop. This program provides access to the function (Fn) keys on the laptop. The tfncky.exe process is installed by default on Toshiba Notebook computers. It allows various functions to be performed using the Fn key found on Toshiba Notebooks. TFncky.exe is required for the Fn key to work correctly and should not be terminated. TFncky.exe is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing Toshiba Fn Keys may adversly impact the system. Fn, short for function, is a modifier key on many keyboards, especially on laptops, used in a compact layout to combine keys which are usually kept separate. It is typically found on laptops due to their keyboard size restrictions. It is also found on many full-sized "multimedia" keyboards as the F-Lock key. It is mainly for the purpose of changing display or audio settings quickly, such as brightness, contrast, or volume, and is held down in conjunction with the appropriate key to change the settings. The Ctrl or control key is most frequently associated with handy modifier keystrokes such as cut-and-paste, or application shortcuts such as Ctrl+S to save. The wide control key on a full size IBM PC keyboard layout allows users to become accustomed to using either the left or right side of the key for these shortcuts. In turn, shrinking and displacing it either to the left or the right causes considerable user-annoyance for a set of users.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. tfncky.exe. is used by Fn Key, If you shut down tfncky.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop tfncky.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Fn Key, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Fn Key, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
