The sym_hi.sys process is the Symbios Hi-Perf SCSI Miniport Driver. Also known as LSI Logic Hi-Perf SCSI Miniport Driver, this driver file is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Developed by LSI Logic, this portable executable-style file type is not referenced internally by other files. This 32-bit executable file does not require direct interface with the user. It is related to the Symbios PCI High Performance Driver (sym_hint), which is the specified SCSI driver for the computer’s drive for its internal system. This is necessary for starting Windows NT and also for booting the computer system drive. It is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers and consumes 28,384 bytes of space on Windows 7/XP. Sym_hi.sys is an essential Windows system file and is digitally signed by Microsoft Windows through Verisign. It is a compressed file and may be accessed through Services from the Control Panel.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. sym_hi.sys. is used by Symbios Hi-Perf SCSI Miniport Driver Module, If you shut down sym_hi.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop sym_hi.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Symbios Hi-Perf SCSI Miniport Driver Module, from your system.
