What is  stac97.sys

The stac97.sys file is an installer component of the AC’97 Audio Controller with SigmaTel CODEC Device Driver developed by SigmaTel, Inc. This Windows driver is an Integrated Controller Hub Audio Driver (WDM) and is commonly found in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. It has direct access to the internals of the computer’s operating system and hardware. This driver allows the user’s computer to send signals to hardware and other devices linked to the computer. This legitimate file may be hacked and replaced with a virus of the same name. This invisible program can be controlled from the Services folder in the Control Panel.
