The stac97.sys file is an installer component of the AC’97 Audio Controller with SigmaTel CODEC Device Driver developed by SigmaTel, Inc. This Windows driver is an Integrated Controller Hub Audio Driver (WDM) and is commonly found in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. It has direct access to the internals of the computer’s operating system and hardware. This driver allows the user’s computer to send signals to hardware and other devices linked to the computer. This legitimate file may be hacked and replaced with a virus of the same name. This invisible program can be controlled from the Services folder in the Control Panel. While it is not a core Windows file, is still a legitimate program from Microsoft. This file has a digital signature from Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher - VeriSign Time Stamping Service. Users need to check their stac97.sys file especially when found in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder, since this may be mimicked by certain malware.
