The spamd.exe process is an executable file for the SpamAssassin daemon for Windows. SpamAssassin is a project of the Apache Software Foundation. It is a spam detection program that is used to identify unsolicited emails in advance. It gives the user the option to block these emails from their email program. SpamAssassin, through spamd.exe, a file which forms part of the executable file components of the said program, works to filter emails by using mechanisms such as text analysis and filtering. It can also block emails coming from email addresses or DNS that have previously been identified as spam senders. Spamd.exe is not a Windows system file; the system can run smoothly with or without it. The file is not a cause for concern when found in one's computer as long as the user has installed the program associated with it. Otherwise, it may be a malware or virus masking as a legitimate executable file.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. spamd.exe. is used by SpamAssassin daemon, If you shut down spamd.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop spamd.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is SpamAssassin daemon, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as SpamAssassin daemon, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
