What is  smtray.exe

The file smtray.exe process is part of the Analog Devices SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio software developed by Analog Devices Inc. Sound cards with COMPAQ/ADI chipsets is needed in installing the smtray.exe process. Prior to installing this audio driver, the user must install first the system chipset driver which can be downloaded from the website of Support and Drivers by using the model number of your system in searching for the driver. Make sure to download the latest driver before installing it in your system. If available, follow first the Read Me instructions or the help file for installing drivers to know if the driver you are going to install is the latest one. This driver can be installed with Windows 2000 of Windows XP operating systems. The smtray.exe places an icon on the system tray in order to access the SoundMAX diagnostic easily. Installed soundcard drivers allows you to quickly access some of the features of the SoundMAX. Upon booting up the Windows, the smtray.exe program is automatically loaded in the system registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices, and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. smtray.exe. is used by Analog Devices, If you shut down smtray.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop smtray.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Analog Devices, from your system.
