The file smmonitor.exe is a legitimate component of IBM software and drivers. Drivers are installed for every device on the computer. These device drivers are small pieces of software that provide the operating system easier access to the hardware. Some drivers like the disk drives, the chipset, on the motherboard, and the processor are shipped with the operating system, but other drivers must be installed after installing a new device. If the operating system does not support the device, the manufacturer will provide drivers that the user of the device can install. Drivers for any given device will differ by operating system and version. This software is free, come with the hardware, and usually can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. The file smmonitor.exe executes a functionality that enables the system to communicate with the IBM device that is installed in the computer. It can be any part of the computer, or devices that are connected to it like the monitor, keyboard, and the mouse. These devises are enabled when the operating system recognizes the devise through the installed driver.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. smmonitor.exe. is used by IBM Driver Modules, If you shut down smmonitor.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
