The smartmon.exe process is an executable file developed by SANtools.com, a company which provides software and consulting assistance to manufacturers and resellers of storage peripherals. It belongs to the product S.M.A.R.T. Disk Monitor, a system that is installed on a computer hard drive that monitors its reliability and warns the user of impending drive failure, if there is any, while there is still time to do possible stored data back-up. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology. Smartmon.exe is the only disk-monitoring system that supports Small Computer Interface or SCSI, a set of guidelines to connect and transfer data between computers and storage devices physically; Fibre Channel or FC, a high-speed network technology mainly used for storage networking; Integrated Drive Electronics or IDE, an electronic interface used between a computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's disk storage devices; Internet Small Computer Interface or iSCSI, an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking standard which links data storage facilities; Serial AT Attachment or SATA, a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices; Statistical Analysis System or SAS, a program that defines a sequence of operations to be performed on data stored as tables, and Serial Storage Architecture or SSA, an open standard for high-speed access to high-capacity disk storage.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. smartmon.exe. is used by S.M.A.R.T. Disk Monitor, If you shut down smartmon.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop smartmon.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is S.M.A.R.T. Disk Monitor, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as S.M.A.R.T. Disk Monitor, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application.
