What is  serial.sys

The serial.sys system process is a system-supplied driver file for serial devices. Serial also functions as a lower-level filter driver for any Plug and Play device requiring a UART-compatible interface. Serial.sys sends data one bit per sequence, over a computer bus, in contrast to parallel.sys where bits are sent in packets via a link composed of parallel channels. Serial.sys is used for long-haul communications and on most computer networks in which the synchronization cable cost makes the parallel communication turn out to be impractical. Serial.sys is used for: • A driver for plug-and-play serial and legacy devices • A filter driver for lower-level and plug-and-play devices such as a UART-compatible interface (e.g. PCMCIA bus modem configuration) • Identical operation between a filter driver and a function driver Serial.sys features the following: • Power management, plug-and-play, and WMI or Windows Management Instrumentation • Power policy owner for serial device stack • Support for unlimited standalone serial ports, multiport boards, and COM ports. • Control of interrupts and device hardware communication.
