The serenum.sys file is a type of driver file that is more commonly known as the Serial Port Enumerator, which is a part of the software Serenum Filter Driver, a component of the Windows operating system by Microsoft Corportation. The file serenum.sys is the executable image of the Serenum, which implements the Serenum service, and is considered as the upper-level device filter driver. Serenum Filter Driver is essential because it is used with the Serial Port Function driver so it can enumerate an RS-232 port, and supports Serial and other types of serial port function drivers, including the Plug and Play serial devices, as well as the Pointer devices. As a Windows operating system file, the serenum.sys process is usually found in the folder C:\Windows, particularly at the directory C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Additionally, the application Serenum supports later versions of Windows OS, beginning from Windows 2000, and is not compatible with Windows Driver Model.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. serenum.sys. is used by Serenum Filter Driver, If you shut down serenum.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop serenum.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Serenum Filter Driver, from your system.
