Putty, known as open source software that serves as a remote terminal application, is executed through the file putty.exe. The file can be downloaded and installed on computers, for free. It provides a client application for the Secure Shell (SSH) network protocol, enabling users to access Linux-based or Unix-based platforms, through their Windows-run computer. What this basically means is that, you can remotely access and work on a Linux or Unix terminal through your Windows platform. The file generally works hand in hand with another process, which is installed through the psftp.exe executable file. The putty.exe file gives you a secure connection to a Linux or Unix platform, while the psftp.exe file enables you to copy files and store them in your local computer, and vice versa. Both of these applications are free, and are generally offered as combo downloads, so you will not have to look for two different sources for each of the files.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. putty.exe. is used by Putty, If you shut down putty.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop putty.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Putty, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Putty, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
