The pop3trap.exe process is an executable component file deployed with the program files, system drivers and modular resources of multiple applications from Trend Micro that are classified as system security programs with a set of functionalities for monitoring, detecting, removing and protecting Windows-based computers against Internet threats, hacker attacks, worms, viruses, spyware programs and other malicious applications. These Trend Micro programs are also implemented with functions that allow these programs to detect and prevent spam as well as emails with possible malicious file attachments and links. The pop3trap.exe process is installed in the system along with the other program files and modules of these Trend Micro applications, and the pop3trap.exe process is placed in the system during the installation of these Trend Micro programs. The pop3trap.exe process is specifically implemented as a component of the POP3 Trap module, which is an applet that is built into these Trend Micro system security tools.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. pop3trap.exe. is used by Trend Micro Applications and Trend Micro POP3 Trap Module, If you shut down pop3trap.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop pop3trap.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Trend Micro Applications and Trend Micro POP3 Trap Module, from your system.
