The process pol.exe is part of the PlayOnline Viewer from Square Enix Co., Ltd. PlayOnline Viewer is used to access PlayOnLine, which is an on-line gaming service that is used as a hub by many PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation2 games published by the company. The browser has clean graphics, high quality sound, and excellent page layout. It is not a general-purpose Internet tool but accessed only games from Square Enix and other content like news about Square Enix products and a comic-strip walkthrough of Final Fantasy XI. PlayOnLine also provides access to Square Enix mobile downloads for Cingular and Verizon wireless customers, and Viewer downloads like wallpapers and greeting cards. It supports email, chat rooms, and a friend list for people met on the service. It links to the Japanese PlayOnLine site, which contains links to individual game sites and explanations of PlayOnLine features. Although the PlayOnLine service is free, games under the service branch requires paid subscriptions. PlayOnLine does not contain Internet browsing software. The software is not available as a stand-alone program, but can be purchased through the PC version of Final Fantasy XI.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. pol.exe. is used by PlayOnLine, If you shut down pol.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop pol.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is PlayOnLine, from your system.
