What is  perfmon.exe

Performance Monitor is a system process that is included in Windows OS installers, and is executed through perfmon.exe. The process was formerly known as System Monitor in older versions of Windows. Performance Monitor took its place in Windows 2000 and higher versions of the OS. The process provides the user with a tool to check the status of the system with regards to its specific functions. Generally, the user can check the status of the system files, kernel, and memory. The process can be used on a single computer or on a network of computers where the Administrator can remotely view the status of other computer systems. With this tool, users can assess and troubleshoot system performance issues, hardware stability, and the performance of other applications installed on the computer. The file is not installed when you install your OS. It has to be manually added by the user. You can locate the file in the Control Panel window through the Add/Remove Programs option.

How can I stop perfmon.exe and should I?

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. perfmon.exe. is used by Microsoft Windows, If you shut down perfmon.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop perfmon.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Microsoft Windows, from your system.
