Partmgr.sys is the system file for Partition Manager, a program for assigning drive letters, for deleting partitions, and setting active partitions. It also converts volumes to NTFS or check drives for errors. Drives are each assigned a drive letter, one or more drive paths if mounted on a NTFS drive. Drives without designators are considered unmounted until assigned a drive letter. A drive needs to be unmounted before being moved in another computer. Managing drive paths and letters is done selecting the drive from the Disk Management and right-clicking it and choosing the “Change Driver Letter and Path” option. The partition management software is easily altered, added and merged partitions. Managed partitions are located on the externally connected drives alongside the existing ones within a virtual environment. It can remove and alter the factory-installed partitions, while some software are able to completely clean all data from within the hard drives.
