The module p17.sys is described as a WDM AudioMiniport (Basic) Driver from Creative Technology Ltd. it is a component of the product Creative SB Audigy LS. WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a technology that involves combining multiple signals on laser beams at various infrared wavelengths for transmission along fiber optic media. Implementation of kernel streaming (KS) in the WDM audio driver models is divided into the port and the miniport drivers, which are separate but complementary. The miniport driver directly controls the hardware device while the port driver that implements kernel streaming contains the operating system. Creative SB (Sound Blaster) Audigy LS is a 5.1 channel output; 24-bit/96Khz output device that supports EAX and Direct 3D audio for gaming and Dolby Digital 5.1. This is a MIDI type device (MIDI Miniport Driver) that is controlled by the module p17.sys, with an IPort Midi port driver interface, while the miniport driver interface is IMiniportMidi. It contains the basic input and output jacks with three analog outputs, one of which doubles as an S/PDIF digital jack. It contains an analog/joystick MIDI port and two internal audio inputs for connecting the modem and the CD-ROM Drive.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. p17.sys. is used by WDM Audio Miniport Driver, If you shut down p17.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop p17.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is WDM Audio Miniport Driver, from your system.
