The oscheck.exe process is also known as the Norton 360 Vista Migration Tool. It is owned by Symantec and it belongs to the software Symantec Shared Component. It is a program that operates during boot which checks essential Windows operating system files for any presence of viral behavior or code. It is not essential to run Norton Antivirus and other related software (Internet Security, Norton System-Works), however, it does help prevent virus attacks and root-kit that would load at start up. The user’s computer system is particularly vulnerable upon start up as it is before the operating system is fully loaded and all the normal safeguards are in place. By this time, it is common for malicious code to attempt to load itself during start up. The process has a visible window. It is Verisign signed file and it is not a Windows system file. It has the technical security rating of 1% dangerous making it safe and is unlikely to pose any potential risk to the user’s computer system.
