What is  msxml4.dll

Msxml4.dll is the file driver for Microsoft XML Core Services, a group of services for applications written in VBScript, JScript, and Microsoft developmental tools to create and build Windows-based, XML-based applications. XML Core Services supports XML 1.0, SAX, DOM, XML schema support that includes XSD and XDR, among others. All MSXML applications are similarly programmed as COM objects or Component Object Model objects. Each component is initialized by a CLSID or ProgID in order to create an MSXML version. The versions of Microsoft XML Core Services are as follows: 1) MSXML 6.0 – the latest product version that supports 64-bit environments. 2) MSXML 5.0 – the binary for Microsoft Office. 3) MSXML 4.0 – an independent and downloadable SDK that supports third-parties and independent software vendors. 4) MSXML 3.0 – supports most of the earlier Windows-based programs and operating systems until Windows Vista. 5) MSXML 2.6 – the earliest version of XML Core Services released as KB887606 alongside MDAC 2.6 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
