The msmpsvc.exe file is an executable application process deployed as one of the EXE component files of the Windows Live OneCare software, which is a system security application that was developed by Microsoft with a set of functionalities for monitoring and protecting the system against potential hacker attacks, user privacy risks, data security threats, system stability issues and data loss or corruption caused by viruses, worms, Trojans, backdoor rootkits and spyware applications among other malware programs. The msmpsvc.exe process is specifically integrated into the Windows Live OneCare software as the executable program dispatcher file of the Microsoft Malware Protection application, which is a small program built into the Windows Live OneCare program for implementing anti-malware detection and protection features into the Windows-based system. The msmpsvc.exe file is also called the Microsoft Malware Protection Service process because the msmpsvc.exe file, once activated by the Windows Live OneCare software, operates as a background process in the system.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. msmpsvc.exe. is used by Windows Live OneCare and Microsoft Malware Protection Application, If you shut down msmpsvc.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop msmpsvc.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Windows Live OneCare and Microsoft Malware Protection Application, from your system.
