What is  msmpeng.exe

There are two known programs that use the executable msmpeng.exe process as their EXE program dispatcher files, both are from Microsoft, and both are meant to provide security to the computer. These applications are Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender. What happens is, when the Microsoft Security Essentials software is installed in the computer, and you already have Windows Defender running; the latter will be automatically terminated to give way to the former. In like manner, when you terminate or uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Defender will revert back to being enabled and running in the background. These programs basically protect the system from malware intrusions. The file has a default path of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\msmpeng.exe. The file does not serve as a system process, but may be essential to keep, to protect the PC from malicious attacks, and remove malicious files if any have already found their way into the system. Files sizes are from 12.48 KB to 17.02 KB.

How can I stop msmpeng.exe and should I?

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. msmpeng.exe. is used by Microsoft Windows, If you shut down msmpeng.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop msmpeng.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Microsoft Windows, from your system.
